Unfortunately, some books about Blackjack and its strategies don’t mention surrender at all. Only good ones do it. And that’s why a lot of blackjack players don’t understand the purpose of surrender. First of all, surrendering can reduce your theoretical loss. And very often surrendering has the advantage over hitting (the next most favorable choice in each case). Of course, it is important to know the rules for surrender that depend on certain circumstances. For example, in eight-deck games where the dealer stands on soft 17, surrender 8-7 versus 10-up along with the hands in the table. Similarly, in one-deck games where the dealer hits soft 17, no hands are surrendered against nine; instead, surrender 7-7, 10-5, 9-6, 10-6, and 9-7 versus 10 or ace, and 10-7 versus ace.
Keep in mind that time of surrendering is very important, because if you know when to use the surrender option correctly, it can be an advantage. On the other hand, if you misuse the option it’s like throwing money down the drain. Never think that you are a coward if you have decided to surrender, it will save a part of your money and you can even profit with this playing option. And, at last, when is it the time to surrender? It seems logical that you should only surrender a hand when your chances of winning that hand are not very good. After all, isn’t it better to save half of your bet than to lose it all?  When you are playing in multiple deck blackjack games, you should only surrender these hands: 16 when the dealer shows a 9, 10, or ace 15 when the dealer shows a 10. And never surrender a soft 15 or 16 (that’s a hand that contains an ace counted as 11 like ace, 5).
